Nyquist chats about his Dew Tour win.

Nyquist won the Dew Cup in dirt. You already knew that. Photos are courtesy of Haro Bikes.

Dew cup, huh?
Yeah, pretty crazy!

How stoked are you?
I’m a very, very happy man. Winning the dirt overall once was insane, but to do it twice is more than I could have asked for.

Did you do anything big to celebrate?
Ummmm, not really. Hahahaha! The family and I went to Greenville afterward to hang out with all of our old friends. We had a great dinner. Pretty tame celebration, I guess.

What were the high and low points of the season for you?
High was probably winning dirt in Salt Lake City. It always feels good to be able to pull off a win when you’re in a do or die situation. My low was probably the way I rode on dirt in Orlando. I was really hoping to ride well there and really clinch the title. Instead I barely made it happen and was stressing the whole contest.

So does the Dew Cup go on display in your house or in a box in the garage?
Not sure. Right now it’s probably gonna get put on a shelf somewhere. I’m not super into displaying trophies around the house, but my wife really wants me to. She says it’s cool to have stuff like that on display for people to look at. So, I guess it’s still undecided… haha!

I think we all saw your dirt victory coming, but you came out of nowhere and shut down the park contest in Florida. What happened there?
Yeah, park was amazing! I couldn’t have been happier with the way it all ended up. Perfect way to end the weekend and year.

What sort of an effect do you feel that your shoes had on your success?
Without sounding too cheesy, having comfortable shoes that are grippy and look good is great. Fashion and function. I’ve had some shoes in the past that didn’t have a good sole on them and it actually made me slip a pedal at the X-Games. I’m really happy with my shoes… South Bronx!

Now that the Dew Tour season is over, what’s next for you?
Chillin’! Chillin’ hard. I just want to relax and be at home doing home things. Still gotta ride, but I’m giving myself a little break.

Any thanks?
Well, thanks to Osiris first off for believing in me as a rider and as a person. Thanks to Haro, Rockstar, Ogio, Bell Helmets, SST, and the Jiffy Mark of Los Gatos. Also, a big thanks to my family.

Final question… can I borrow $75,000?
I wish it was $75,000… turns out they dropped it to $60,000! Hahahaha! Hard economic times for sure.

Back Lip Photo: Terry Worona

I hear you got injured, what happened and how is your foot?
I was on tour with Osiris for the first time, and I was looking forward to it. I saw a spot on the way to our hotel entering Quebec City, it was a black marble ledge over dirt, so when we got to the hotel I threw my shit in there then went to the ledge with Dustin Montie and Rich Odam. I was trying front crook fakie, and I jumped off my board and my foot landed on the curb and stretched the fuck out of my ligaments. I wasn’t able to skate for the rest of the tour, and now two and half months later it’s still in the healing process.

Are you motivated to skate harder in other cities?
Fuck yeah cause I know if I am in my own city I could just go back the next day. When I am in other cities there is only a limited time that I am there for, so I push myself, but even in my own city I try to get as much has I can done fosho.

What is your favorite city to travel to?
I very much like Toronto cause that place has an infinity of spots and there are a lot of people I know there and more people that film/shoot every day.

Who would you rather go on a trip with?
I like going on trips with people that are homies and are motivated like you.

Hardflip Photo: Terry Worona

How would you describe your lifestyle?
Skate or die basically. Skateboarding is in my blood.

Why DGK?
Cause it’s the freshest shit there is, and I’m down with that.

KFC or MCdee’s?
Dude, I am down with any kind of beige, but if I had to pick just one I think I would go with KFC cause its greasier.

Feeble Photo: Terry Worona

Where do you see yourself 5 years?
In California or dead in a cemetery in Ottawa.

What’s your best memory in the past 5 years?
Rolling away from a 14-stair back lip in Ottawa. I had to go back like 20 times to land that shit. I got fined, arrested, chased, baned, and a warrant for my arrest for that trick. I would not stop for nothing to land that trick, and it was the best feeling in the world for me to finally role away. Fosho best memory of Satan.

What’s your favorite spot to chill at?
This spot in Ottawa called the 2 up 3 down manny pad. You could just chill there, skate flat and skate the many. So fucking fun.

Is there one person you make fun of?
You.

Tall can or forty?
Fortys cause they look more G!

Chicken or Bacon?
Hh fosho Bacon. Dog you are Satans son fool. So down.

Night sesh or day sesh?
I like night sesh’s more cause I find it looks better when you light up a spot and cause there are less people walking around.

Tre flip or tre shuv revert?
Fuck? What kinda question is that? Tre flips fosho.

Leticia rips. Each time I see her, I become more and more impressed. Leticia is the future of girls skateboarding. I caught up with her the day after she won the Maloof contest and chatted a bit.

Everyone in the contest was amazing, what was it like skating with all the girls while they were ripping so hard?
It was so amazing and they’re the girls who inspire me to skate and being there with them was a blast! They are sooo good, and they motivate me to skate.

Being that you were one of the youngest girls out there, were you intimidated at all?
Not really. When I first came to compete in the X-Games I was very intimidated. After I got to skate with them more often, and we’re all friends now.

Were there any tricks you wanted to try but didn’t get to before time was out?
Yep, I wanted do the big handrail and ollie from the roof gap into the bank which I did before a couple days before, but Elissa was doing it, so I didn’t want to look like I wanna go after her.

Now that you are 25K richer, what are you going to do with the money?
Buy lots of candy…..I’m just kidding, I’m gonna save for my future and be able to live in California.

What’s next?
Keep Skating, learn new tricks and film for the new the Side Project video that’s is coming up.

That’s perfect, when you skate your hands look like Butcher’s knives and you love meat, you are ‘The Butcher’.

1. Let’s start off with how the nickname “The Butcher” originated?

Back in 1998 I was with Jake Phelps and Phil Shao at Jake´s office, and they asked me if I had a nickname back in Argentina. I told them that some of my friends called me “labucha”, and since it sounded like “Butcher” they said, “That’s perfect, when you skate your hands look like Butcher’s knives and you love meat, you are ‘The Butcher’”

2. I remember when I first started seeing you in the mags, you kickflip back tailed Hubba back in the Think days. How have things changed since those days and how did Toy Machine come about?

Some things are still the same. I can still do kickflip back tails, and I can still skate, but switching to Toy Machine made my skating better. Skating with Ed and the rest of the guys made me push myself even more. Getting on Toy Machine happened after I went on a trip to Argentina with Ed, Austin and Caswell (the whole team back then), and realized that Think wasn’t my place anymore, so I told Ed how I felt and after the trip I left Think and got on Toy.

3. I know that you’re into photography. How long have you been shooting photos for, and do you remember your first published photo you had in a magazine?

I have been shooting photos for about 15 years since I went to the University back in Argentina and studied graphic design. One of the classes was photography, and I learned how to develop and print B&W photos. That was great. After that, I kept shooting on every trip that I have been on. Over the years I bought better cameras and got more serious about it. Now I’ve been shooting skate photos, and it’s really fun. My first photo published was actually in Thrasher back in 2001. Luke Ogden shot the cover of Steve Bailey doing a FS ollie over some latter, and I shot a double angle. It was really small, but after that I got some stuff published in Kingpin and then Thrasher.

4. It seems like for a while Osiris had their OG Storm crew going strong and then you and a couple of others got on. When did you start riding for Osiris, and who was the one that hooked that up?

I got on when Chris Pastras was the team manager. He called me up one day and told me that they wanted to change the team and that they wanted me to be part of that change. That was back in 2003.

5. You’ve been living in Barcelona for a minute now. What would you say are the pros and cons about being a pro for American brands and living in Europe?

The pros are that I can skate everyday without getting in my car, and the cons are that I’m not around for all the shop signings and little US trips.

6. Throughout the years of skating, what are some of the videos that influenced you growing up in the past and present?

Hokus Pokus, Video Days, Questionable and Welcome to Hell. I love all the Cliché videos. Fred is my favorite.

7. A few years back you ended up in the finals for the es’ game of SKATE against Koston and P-Rod. Pretty sick! What’s one of your go to moves when your playing SKATE?

SW BS 180 late front foot flip.

8. What would you say are some of the differences in growing up in Argentina skating compared to growing up in the states skating?

Rough spots and sketchy dudes stealing your board.

9. Hypothetically speaking, If you were riding for Osiris in the Storm days and had to room with one of the riders from back then, which one would it be?

Jerry Hsu or Louie Barletta.

10. Out of all the countries that you’ve been to thus far for skating, which one would you say you enjoyed the most?

ESPAÑA

11. Alright last question. If you had to choose one, would you rather back 180 the Sports Arena triple set that Jeremy Wray ollied or wear a pair of bright red D-3’s for a month straight? Which would it be?

BS 180 the Sports Arena wearing the bright red D3s

I wanted to bad, but a lot goes into that trick and there wasn’t a good straight jump for it.

Below is an interview we did with Jeremy just after he won his 2 medals at the 2008 X-Games. We hope you Enjoy it. We miss you Jeremy.

1. When back flipping and you see your feet and notice you’re not wearing
Osiris shoes, how bummed are you? I’m happy and sad, cause if I rode in shoes I would break my feet, but maybe Osiris will make riding boots for me!

2. On a scale from 1 to 10, what part did your Osiris shoes play in you
getting gold? A big part, Osiris has supported me from day one since I first stared and now I’m glad I can return the favor. They keep my feet SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN!

3. How close were you in trying your silver medal winning double grab heart attack flip in freestyle run? I wanted to bad, but a lot goes into that trick and there wasn’t a good straight jump for it. I seen that a lot of guys were having a hard time just completing a run, so I felt I didn’t need to.

4. Were you bummed when Twitch couldn’t finish his run, or were you just
thinking about winning at the time? Yeah! It was a happy/sad type moment. I felt bad, but then I realized I had that much better of a chance toward winning the gold, so I was on a mission!

5. Did you go into X-Games with confidence or were you a little nervous to do
your first double grab flip in dirt? I’m not gonna lie, I was nervous and at the same time I was pumped up cause I knew that I could land it!

6. Did you know that the gold was yours once you saw Rebeaud do a dead
sailor? Ya pretty much. They still scored him high, so I knew I needed to change my run, but at that time I was like if I can’t pull it off right now then I would kick my own ass!

7. Would you ever think about racing rally cars In the X-Games? Ya! I love truck and car racing. Always have. I think its cool they put it in X. It gives us athletes a future for when we can’t ride any more.

8. How long do you think you have spent looking at your two medals since
the event? A solid week!

9. What are your planes for the rest of the summer? Just to keep the pressure on and stay in the top three at the rest of the contests.

My name is Tom Remillard. I’m 17, and I’ve been skating for 9 years.

Let’s start this thing off by getting your full name, age, and how long you’ve been riding your axe for? My name is Tom Remillard. I’m 17, and I’ve been skating for 9 years.

I remember you as the little booger creeping up into the office and thinking “who the hell is this little gromet chilling?” Tell us how you initially got hooked up with the Osiris. I was waiting for the bus after skating at the bridge and Bryan House was sitting with his chick, who I’m gunna add is hot as fuck, at the trolley stop. He came up to me, gave me his card, and told me to hit him up to go skate. I started skating this little mini ramp every Wednesday with him, Mike, and Coung during their lunch break and somehow I ended up on the flow deal.

[See post to watch Flash video]

It seems like you’ve been lurking around quite a few places since I first met you at the Clairemont park. Where do you spend most of your time shralping in SD, and what’s one of your favorite spots you’ve lurked on outta town? These days Washington St. has been super fun. As far as going out of town, Oregon is the best.

Every time we’re wrapping about skating you always have to drop knowledge on some skater that skated way before you were even born. First off I want to know how you always know these facts and second, which veteran pros influence you these days? I already know Cards is in there. I’m just a skate nerd I guess. The dudes that hype me up the most are Hewitt, Hitz, Heddings, and Cudlip: where you at dog? P-kid is sick to.

What was the newest bit of skate knowledge that you’ve learned? Arto Sari is on Alien Workshop and that bums me out a whole lot. That fool should be on flip for life.

I know your driving now. I hear from a lot of people you drive like a chinky-eyed maniac. How long have you been driving for, and have you gotten into any hyjinx while behind the wheel? I’ve been driving for about 8 months, and I’m still getting pulled over for looking under age. Shit sucks. As far as hyjinx goes, just a lot of fools looking at me because I look like I’m 13 behind the wheel.

So tell everyone what WSVT means and who came up with the term Suffer? WSVT stands for Washington St. Volleyball Team. Hitz is the one who came up with Suffer Camp, which is going to shitty ass spots and going for it knowing your going to slam. It’s just pure suffering.

I see you’ve been to a couple of contests this year little buddy. How do you feel about skating in those things? Is it more about getting out of San Diego or skating some new terrain? Contests are fun because you see people you haven’t seen for a while and you’re in a different place. I’m just trying to do as much as I can. You never know how many opportunities you’re gonna get. To do shit like that you just gotta jump in the van sometimes and see what happens.

If you had a go to trick what would it be? For most kids your age it would probably be a salad grind down a handrail, but I’m guessing yours is the front rock or rainbow slide right? Or am I wrong? Kickflip attempt.

How do you get to skate in these contests anyways? In other words who’s hooking you up these days kid? The dudes at Anti-Hero and Spitfire hook me up pretty good, and of course Osiris, Route 44 Skateshop, Ace Trucks and Alphanumeric shits back son and DAF.

Alright, one last question Hemi. If a meteor was going to hit our planet next week and you could pick any place in the world to skate at with any five people, which place would it be and what five skaters would it be? Sounds wack as fuck, but one last sesh at WSVT with Neil, Raven, Peter, Brandon, and that one Scottish fool with missing teeth.

We check in with Eric McHenry and talk about the Ultimate Boarder Triathlon.

Osiris asks Eric McHenry about the Ultimate Boarder Triathlon…

What were your expectations on the event? It was my first event of this kind and I was a little bit skeptical, but I was just stoked to be a part of it. I have passion for improving the technical side in all board sports.

What was it like being in a snowboard contest? It was inspiring to see the other guys pushing the bar and at the same time seeing what I needed to learn to go bigger next year.

How did you feel going into the surf contest? Since I have competed so much in the water and feel comfortable surfing C Street, I had a game plan to catch the best waves. It’s also cool to think you have so many top-level pros in snowboarding and skateboarding sharing the waves in the line-up.

When they announced you as the winner in surfing, what was going through your mind? Stoked and excited to be on top of the podium, also super stoked for my sponsors, family and friends.

What was it like for you, and what did they have you do after the win? Super excited for the win, I knew there would be media coverage after the event so I just tried to widen my smile for the cameras, magazine editorial, internet and radio station interviews.

What did you do to prepare for the skate contest? I didn’t practice. I mingled with the mob and checked out the skating, got a little lunch, then got nervous.

How did you feel while skateboarding in your jam session? I looked at the ramp and wished I took a practice run so I knew it was a nervous first drop in and then I realized it was super smooth. Definitely knew I was in the lower pack, but the ramp was super fun and the jam format was pretty mellow.

What are your thoughts on the whole event? The whole event was well put together, great staff, planned out, and they really made us feel like professional athletes. Props to all the staff. I was a late entry and they got me in there. The contest was on schedule, never ran late and with no glitches.

What are your plans for next year’s event? Be a better all around boarder and come with some new tricks. Next year will be more competitive, so I am just going to keep surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding as much as I can.

Did winning the surf event, inspire you to take snowboarding and skateboarding a bit more serious? For sure, I’ll be riding and improving.

Osiris is pleased to announce the addition of Arnost Ceral to the Czech Republic/Osiris team.

Arnost Ceral Photo: David Blazek

First off, what is your name, how old are you, how long have you been skating, and where do you live?

Hello, my name is Arnost Ceral. I am 20 years old and I have been skating for almost 8 years. I am living in Czech Republic in an old town called Hradec Kralove.

Most of our readers won’t even know where the Czech Republic is, so where exactly is it, and what is the skate scene like?

Czech Republic is located in a heart of Europe. Our neighbours are: Germany on west, Austria on south, Slovakia on east and Poland on north side. Czech skate scene got much better during last 5 years. Some of our riders are being more and more succesful in European contests, such as Petr Horvat, Tomas Vintr, Lukas Danek or Slovakian stars Peter Molec and Ondro Leskoviansky.

Arnost FS Flip Photo: David Blazek

How did you get hooked up with Stigma Distribution and Osiris?

It was long time ago when the Stigma guys were filming and photo shooting in my hometown. Local skate shop owner Mira asked me to be their skate spot guide. We were skating and filming, and the Stigma guys liked my skating so they asked to ride for them. Since that time we are together and our cooperation is getting better and better.

What is your favorite place to skate? I was twice in Athens with the Horsefeathers team, and I like it there so much. There is so many spots and each of them is completely different. During winter I skate every day in an old small gym where I have a rail and a sliding box.

What are some of your warm up tricks? There are many of them but I like to start with 360 flip, ss heelflip or ss bs tailslide.

Any travel plans in the near future? We just got back from Berlin where we were with the Horsefeathers team filming for a bonus part of our new video. In the end of March we go to Canarian Islands for 2 weeks for filming and photoshooting. I plan to go to Carhart — King of wood contest in Rouen France. I also plan to go to Adidas Clash contest in Berlin and I want to compete again in World Cup skateboarding at Mystic Cup here in Prague. I was thinking about Volcom AmsterDamn contest but we will see later how it will end up.

<a class="thickbox"href="http://www.osirisshoes.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/arnost_ss_back_lip.jpg" title="Arnost SS Back Lip Photo: David Blazek">

Arnost SS Back Lip Photo: David Blazek

Who are some of your favorite skaters? Petr Horvat, Rodrigo TX, P.J. Ladd, and Shuriken Shannon.

What are your top three favorite skate shoes of all time? I used to skate the Accel from eS and it was a great shoe. Now I love the South Bronx, Bronx or BLVD from Osiris.

What are your top three favorite skate videos of all time? P.J. Ladd Horrible life, The Firm — Can’t stop, where Rodrigo TX has 2 parts. And now – Lakai — Fully Flared.

What are some of your interests outside of skateboarding? When I am not skating I am usually just chilling with my girlfriend or my friends, but I spent most of my free time skating.

Let’s test your trivia skills. This is from one of the most popular Czech myths. The beautiful Princess Libuse was sitting with her ladies one day and she had a vision. What did she see? Wow! You got me. But I think that she constellated a birth of a city of Prague. But I am sure that she didn’t know that there would be a great skate spot made of marble called Stalin. I’ll give that one to you. She envisioned the future of Prague and all it’s greatness.

Arnost SS BS 5-0 Photo: David Blazek

Is there anything you would like to say or anyone you would like to thank? Yes, yes.. I would like to thank the Stigma guys who have been supporting me a lot for a long time. Thank you! And of course I would like to thank Osiris for giving me such a great chance to be a part of the European team. And last but not least, I want to thank my parents and friends because without them it just wouln’t be so good.

What was your favorite country we visited? England. I like to talk to people without a struggle. There is no language barrier. I think London is a fun town, lots of friends, good record stores, chicks and I love the greasy food!

Overall, what has the response been to the video? I hear I should of had last part a lot, but I love Rattray’s part. I haven’t heard a single complaint about the video. It’s been only positive stuff. Seriously, the video is great, so I don’t think people can be let down in anyway.

How was your experience filming for Feed The Need different than Cataclysmic Abyss? For Cataclysmic Abyss I didn’t get hurt with only three months left to film. Also, we went on film trips for Osiris, as for Foundation we never did any trips for the video.

Where there any countries you would have liked to visit before our deadline? China.

Did you have specific tricks in mind you wanted to get, but couldn’t due to your broken ankle? There was so much stuff I wanted to do, I didn’t get a chance to film the ender I wanted. But they’re always more videos to film for. It sucked getting hurt near deadline for Osiris, because there were a lot of things I wanted to try.

You’ve seemed to heal up very quickly. How has the rehabilitation process been so far? Skating is coming back ok, I lack some of the confidence I use to have, due to the fact that it still hurts when I jump down big things. I’m almost 100 percent healthy, so I can’t complain. I’m just glad to be ok and be with my friends skating again.

Now that you’re back skating, what are your future plans for 2008? Just to keep on rolling.

Congratulations on purchasing a new house. What are some of the improvements you’ve been making lately? Well, I tore down the old fireplace and put up a new one. It’s made of slate and the mantel and hearth are all new too. My Dad and I did all from scratch and stuff, so that’s cool. Now it looks awesome and it was fun, that’s what I’m most happy about. My Dad and I have been doing all sorts of things to it. Its gonna be on cribs for sure—not. But its smashing!!

Spring 08 is the official release date for your two signature shoes from Osiris. How was the design process on both the “Duffel” and the “Corpse”? |It was great. I got to do everything I wanted. I was able to create what I think is a perfect skate shoe.

What are your top three favorite skate shoes of all time?

When I was younger I loved the Duffs KCK’s, Black and Gum.

88 avengers

My new Osiris shoe, the Duffel. Pick up a pair when they hit stores!

How was your outlook coming to Oahu this year? I am excited to come to Oahu every year for the winter. I arrived to Oahu at the end of October. I was surfing a lot and I got a lot of really good boards from MB surfboards.

How were you preparing yourself to be ready for this year for big waves and the Pipe Masters? One way is I go to the Quicksilver performance house here on the North Shore, which has mixed martial arts, yoga, and intuitionalists. I am also getting used to my equipment because 75% of my boards are quads. I have been working really close with Michael Byrne to develop the fastest board, and we now have the Fuller quad pro model.

Fuller with his pro model

Tell me about the hype or talk was the night before the contest? The talk was all about how bad the conditions were.

What were you thinking when you woke the morning of the Contest? When I woke up I couldn’t believe they were running it. But no matter what the conditions were I had to stay psyched.

Since you didn’t surf the first day of the event and were seated into the 2nd round what did you do to stay psyched? I bailed with my girlfriend and surfed somewhere else. There was nothing to watch anyways besides Andy Irons he had some really good waves in his heat early in the morning.

A.I. in round one at the Pipe Masters

Who did you have for your first heat draw? Mick Lowe. It was actually his last contest he was retiring. It sucked that the waves were so bad being his last heat.

But you ended up getting a 9.5 in your heat? Yeah well it still being small there are some windows and there will be a couple of sets. The winds changed before my heat and I saw Ky Otten get a 9 and I said I wanted a 9.

A view from the inside

How did you end up getting your big score to advance out of that heat? I ended up sitting with priority and a wave came from deep, it was a good thing I chose my quad instead of my thruster. I was debating which board to ride and I went with the quad.

Why was it a good thing you went with the quad? Because I was really deep and I don’t think I would have made it out of the barrel.

relying on the four fin

Being it was Mick Lowes last contest did you have any mixed feelings for him losing or you winning? No! I just felt bad for him that the waves sucked for his sake being the last heat of his career. I would have been stoked competing against him in big Pipe cause he is a definite charger.

Danny interview after his heat win

What was it like for your next heat? My next heat was against a Brazilian and it was the last heat of the day. I was watching the waves get worse and the winds turn on shore. There were no barrels and I only got one score. I wasn’t that disappointed by losing out because of how the rest of the comp was. The waves only got worse and they held the semi and finals at Off The Wall. I still would like to of won of course but it was just a bad time for Pipe and that’s what I like to surf. Also I know that there is the Back Door Shoot Out and The Monster Energy Pro coming up. Plus I am m sitting here looking at this insane quiver I have for when the waves break.
