5.11.09 MAYHEM INTERVIEW
Osiris: How is this new found fame treating you?
MayheM: Man, the new found fame is treating me like a beautiful mistress who just reared out of the closet and jumped in bed with my wife and my other girlfriend.
Osiris: You’ve always been a recognizable figure, but now thanks to the show “Bully Beatdown”, you’ve gone to a whole new level. Are you getting stopped now in bathrooms?
MayheM: Yeah, basically. I cannot go and take a dump without someone waiting outside to take a picture. And then I’m like, “Dude, why do you have a camera out in a bathroom stall?” Very weird.
Osiris: With this new found fame comes new found responsibility. You just went out to Orlando for the Journey’s BBQ with Osiris Shoes. You did a signing, how did that go?
Mayhem: Man, that was awesome. You know what? I felt like a rock star. I felt like everybody and their brother knew who I was. It was great. It was cool, and everybody in our target demographic and even people outside of it are into “Bully Beatdown” and really like it. It’s crazy to see that happen, almost out of nowhere.
Osiris: Is it cool to now sorta be lumped in with that whole action sports crew, of motocross, skateboarders, those guys?
MayheM: Oh heck yeah. The only reason I got into fighting was because I was a terrible skateboarder. I beat people up at the skate park. I’m just happy to even be able to rub elbows with these sick skaters and BMX guys and the rest of the action sports athletes. Its like, I wish I could have done what they are doing. But instead, I was just good at punching people and getting punched.
Osiris: Speaking of punching people and getting punched, you have a big fight coming up in Japan. Facing Jacare for the DREAM MiddleWeight title, it is a rematch, so I imagine you’re coming in with a different gameplan.
MayheM: Totally. The last fight I lost a decision because I fought him on his terms and I kinda fought with all emotion and all heart, instead of fighting him like I should have, which was being more technical and more disciplined. You can’t win every fight just by going for gusto. You gotta be a bit smarter and use that gusto when you need it.
Osiris: Well, obviously Osiris sees that you have that gusto. You were part of the initial Osiris MMA team. And now there’s talks of you even getting your own shoe.
MayheM: I’m trying to make it the “MayheM Boot.” The “MayheM Bully Stomper Boot.” That’s what I’m looking forward to.
Osiris: Growing up, you’d see basketball players get their own shoe. Skateboarders getting their own shoe. Did you ever think you’d see the day where an MMA fighter/Z Level Celebrity/Entertainer would have their own shoe?
MayheM: There’s a lot of things where I think I’m gonna be the first to do them. I’m trying to bring it to the next level, where it doesn’t matter what I do. I’m gonna bring MMA to people who don’t watch MMA, and just spread my wings.
Osiris: Anything you wanna say to all those little skater kids out there?
MayheM: Man, I don’t wanna tell them nothing. Especially with me going out of town, they’ll probably try to rob my house.
