4.13.08 PHILLY AM RECAP
It was a long day as almost 250 kids signed up to enter the 8th annual Philly Am held at the Woodward park just outside of the city. The groms started it off and didn’t disappoint. A lot has changed since my day. Most of the groms were feeble and smith grinding the rail. Not bad at all, but in the end it was John DePerrot who took 1st while my new friend Donte Tonella finished in 3rd. The grom division made way for the intermediate, and with about 55 kids in the division with 2 runs a piece it was a long heat. After almost 2 hours Jake Daney came out on top. Next it was time for the advanced kids to take the course. It was another long heat. I left to get some lunch, and when i got back the rail, double set, and pyramid were getting handled, and Chris Tams and his smooth style earned himself the top spot with a flawless run. It was then time for the sponsored division. Being this is Chris Cole country, one kid even listed his sponsors as “Chris Cole Flow.” Not a bad sponsor to have. The course was annihilated by them all. The rail and hubba were by far taking the biggest beating and after the judges deliberated, Kyle Fredricks came out victorious. Finally it was time for the best trick contest on the rail/hubba/double set. This is what everyone stuck around to see. The carnage soon followed as everyone hucked themself over or onto the rail and hubba. Some of the highlights were Ishad Wair with his bigspin flip front board and Kyle Fredericks with his kickflip back lip and nollie bigspin back lip. Not soon after Shane Colville stepped it up to a new level and as soon as he landed his 360 flip 50-50 down the hubba, he moved over to the rail and within 6 tries he shut the rain down. As he rode away the contest was over and Shane one the cash. Thanks to Jon Crans and ThreeSixteen Skateboards as well as Woodward Skatepark for holding the event. See you next time.
