10.23.07 BATTLE OF THE SHOPS
This past Saturday Automatic Magazine held the 4th annual Battle of the Shops. 9 shops brought out their secret weapons to compete on the 4 obstacles to see which shop was truly the best. First up was the Tech Center and Justin Cefai from Zj’s was impressive. Justin with his manny up the A-frame to kickflip to nose manny down easily gave him first place and a cool $1000 for his pocket. After the tech center it was Double Set time. For 30 minutes everyone hucked themselves down the double set as many times as they could. Jimmy Carlin was on a mission. Within minutes, Jimmy landed a hardflip, varial heel, double flip, heelflip, and a dolphin flip before anyone was even warmed up. Jimmy annihilated the double set, and it looked like Jimmy was going to 3-peat on the obstacle until Kevin Romar made a nollie bigspin heel, nollie 360, and a nollie varial heel. Kevin took first and Jimmy had to settle for second. After the double set it was time to watch Josh Matson on the tranny obstacle. Josh is in a league of his own. He slams harder than you think imaginable and laughs it off. I have no idea what Josh landed, but I think it was everything he tried, and most of it was some variation of a trick I could never name. Josh earned himself the $1000. Osiris flow rider Tom “Grom†Remilard tried his hand at the tranny obstacle and was the youngest guy out there and held his own. Early in the event, Tom took a nice man splits slam and hurt his manhood. You can see the grimace in his face as he rode away. Check out the photos to see what pain looks like on the face. It wasn’t a good day for Tom. Once he got on the board again, he took a nice knee slide on the cheese grater cement, and that would end Tom’s day. Tom is still young, so he has plenty more of these events to enter. This will not be the last you see of him. Lastly it was time for the main event. The double set turned into the 10-stair rail, and it was annihilation time. The standouts were Marquise Preston and Wes Kramer. After the dust settled it was Wes with his switch frontside nosegrind, switch flip to boardslide and switch noseblunt slide that earned his first place. Zj’s took home the $5000 and the trophy.
