8.28.07 11 QUESTIONS WITH CASWELL BERRY

Caswell

1. Yo Caswell. I know you’ve been in the game for quite a long time now. What was your first real sponsor brotha? Volcom since 1991 or something. I was a little rat that would fly around the skatepark with pads bigger than my limbs. Some of the Volcom guys came to the park and met me and my family, and they decided to give me clothes and have never stopped.

2. When you were younger what skate videos did you grow up watching? Did you have a favorite one? To get this straight, I started skating in 1990, so when I think of being younger and skating, I think of when I was 9 or 10. Back then all I had was some NSA Del Mar contest or Powell Peralta video. I usually opted for the Powell vids.

3. I read your recent Question Authority in the latest Skateboarder. It was a barrel of laughs. You’re talking about the 12-ounce lift and smoke in your lungs. Are you much of a partier, or do you only get loose when the time is right? Man, to tell you the truth, I rarely drink when at home. I like to relax. I mean, I’ll have an occasional drink at dinner or when skating a mini ramp. I smoke all the time though, like it is legal. You can do shit when you are feeling loose, which is to me the most important thing.

4. In Bag of Suck I noticed that you skate every type of terrain, but in the end of your part you smith grinded that beast of a rail. Do you skate big rails often? And what type of mind frame do you have before you try a move like that? Shoot, you gotta want it when doing some big rails. I used to think of an animal like a water buffalo and my favorite skater at the time. Another good thing to do is not think. If you can do that, you are the master of your domain!!!!

5. Enjoi is a lot of peoples favorite company. It looks like a tight group of homies having fun. How do you like skating for them thus far, and what’s the difference between skating for them compared to another board company? It’s pretty much the best thing for me. You have to know what you’re getting into you know? I think you have to mesh well with all of the dudes and like everyone genuinely. No disrespect to the other sponsors I’ve had, but I just didn’t feel close to them. You also gotta want to be a part of what’s going on as well. Like a well-oiled bearing is what kind of relationship you want with a sponsor. Does that even make sense? I’m kinda out of it!

6. Have you ever been to a San Jose Sharks game? Hell Yeah, I took my cousin to see one for a gift. It was ill as fuck! An energy was radiating from the crowd that I can’t even explain.

7. I know you’re filming for a couple of videos right now including our video Feed the Needand The Tilt Mode Vid. Looks like people are going to see a lot of you this year. When you film stuff do you usually plan tricks you’re going to do, or do you just go with the flow? When I plan things, they only turn out about half of the time. I like to just roll with the punches and see what happens.

8. Are you a Coca-Cola dude or a Pepsi guy? Fuck Pepsi!

9. Hypothetically speaking. If you were riding for Osiris during the Storm days and had to room with one of the riders from back then which one would it be? Jerry for sure.

10. I noticed you have a San Jose tattoo. Obviously you have San Jose pride. If you had to relocate to another city and could choose from any city in the world, which would it be and why? Australia seems to come to mind. Somewhere there maybe. They speak English and folks seem to be laid back.

11. If you had to choose one. Would you rather late shuv-it El Toro or go to the dentist for a week? Hahaha, I already done the week at the dentist. I went to the dentist last year something like 12 times. The first time I went in they laid down the law about flossing. I am now addicted to floss! I also used all of my insurance up. Luckily it wasn’t to late for my choppers.

8.27.07 SURFING COMMANDOS COMPETITIVE BOOT CAMP

Grand View

The session started at 7:00am with the conditions over cast with a little onshore breeze and the surf being an inconsistent 2 feet with an occasional 3 foot set. It didn’t matter to the cadets, because they had to stretch and be ready for their 5 mile run before they got in the water. There wasn’t any complaining and the cadets were determined to finish the run and not come in last. Mason took a strong lead and sprinted out the last two blocks followed by Luke passing up Sofia on the last leg. Simon being a new cadet didn’t prepare himself but kept a consistent pace to finish in front of the heart of a lion 10 year old, Jacob Davis who wasn’t going to be left behind by the bigger kids. My hat goes off to the grom for putting up the fight.

After a short break the cadets were ready to jump in the water for the 2-mile paddle surf. Jacob was on fire. He was a wave magnet and caught waves up and down the beach to take the consistency win of the paddle.

After a short mental preparation for four 20-minute heats, the cadets were winded but anxious to surf. The first heat Luke started off strong with catching the sets and taking the lead from the beginning and holding through till the end. Jacob stayed on the inside and caught a lot of waves and stayed consistent to hold onto second with Mason gunning for him. The second heat was close with little Jacob catching his inside waves getting his scores then moving to the outside and catching a set to put himself in the lead. Not long after, Luke wasn’t going to let it happen and came out with the heat winning wave to make sure the little guy wasn’t going to get the bragging rights. Mason with the look of determination took the constructive criticism, listened and executed as he caught the best wave to take the last two heats and win the overall.

After the running and water training, we went for some lunch. As we entered Pipes Cafe in Cardiff, we walked in, picked up a magazine and our injured cadet Andrea Luis was on the cover of Swoop magazine. After lunch a couple of the guys and I weren’t through and decided to do some cross training and went to do some airs and grinds at an undisclosed ramp. What a talented group of young athletes. Osiris Shoes and I are proud and privileged to have these future stars represent the Osiris brand.

I am looking for young talent to recruit and begin training to begin their career with direction, determination, focus and skill to take over the amateur surfing ranks and begin a quest to become a world class professional. Look forward to seeing you in the water.

8.24.07 BENIFIT FOR LYON HERRON

Fuller_backflip

Pascal Stansfield and sponsors put together a benefit in Malibu for Lyon Herron who was diagnosed with cancer. The event drew a crew of professional surfers from all over. The first day of the surf event was canceled due to the surf conditions. Paskal and sponsors had rented out the Malibu Pier that evening and Danny Fuller made sure his gainer would please the crowd. We all enjoyed ourselves and kept entertained throughout the evening. There was a silent auction, food, drinks and a documentary of Lyon Herron that was inspiring to all who attended.

The event was under way the next morning with the sun blazing, long boards, short boards, bikinis and guitars. Even though the surf didn’t pick up, everyone was in good spirits to support the cause. Who can beat a day in the sun as beautiful as this with your friend’s, family and kids?

After a long day at the event, we ended back at Danny Fuller’s house in Venice. Relaxing watching TV, sending out emails and taking a stroll down the boardwalk in front of his pad. Check out the sights we had while killing time before I was going to drop him of at LAX to catch his flight to Maui.

8.23.07 LUSK, DEW TOUR, AND THE DAILY HABIT

Lusk

This past weekend was the Panasonic Dew tour, which was held in Portland, Oregon. This event was the 3rd stop leaving only two more to go. Osiris rider, Jeremy Lusk qualified 3rd in the prelims and was feeling good about his riding. The promoters asked Jeremy if he would do morning media on the day of the finals, which required him to wake up at 5am and be riding by 6am for the local news. While riding before the sun came up, Jeremy went down and broke a few ribs. Being that Jeremy is a machine, he got back on the bike and still managed to get 6th in the finals, and he is still in the running to get top 5 in points. CONGRATS JEREMY!

In other Lusk news, airing Friday, August 24, at 9:00 pm Eastern Time (6:00 pm Pacific Time) and telecast three additional times, gunning it full throttle to reach FMX superstar status, one of the sickest aerialists and a recently anointed Osiris and Metal Mulisha rider, Jeremy Lusk is here.
