7.9.07 TRIUMPH *UNITED MMA UPDATE #2
You’re either fighting or partying! Summertime is in full swing. World champ Rampage Jackson is taking some needed R&R time and hanging with his family in Memphis. That’s not going to last for that long considering he has the biggest fight in his career coming up in September against Pride world champion Dan Henderson. With three belts on the line, expect some major training up ahead! Mayhem Miller is getting into full training mode as well and has made an 100% recovery from his hand injury. Mayhem broke some bones in his hand when he spilt his opponent’s forehead in two.
Some great fights happened over the last month, here are the highlights.
The much anticipated Pro Elite -Strike Force event took place at the San Jose shark tank amongst a completely filled house. Many great fights happened that night, but it was San Jose’s Cung Le who really stole the show. The former San Shao champion put on a beautiful display of martial arts dismantling his opponent Tony Frykland. Tony, hung in but lost to decision against the heavily favored Cung Le. The Shamrock/Baroni fight followed Cung Le and proved to be worth the year wait. The former UFC champion wasted no time peppering and mocking the over confident Baroni. Even with a blown out ACL Frank Shamrock showed why he is still a force to be reckoned with submitting Phil Baroni via rear naked choke in the 2nd round.
BJ Penn made his way back into the octagon for the Ultimate fighter finale. Fighting Jens Pulver for the second time, BJ showed the world how dominant his Jiu Jitsu and striking skills are. Transitioning from one submission to the next, BJ toyed with Pulver only to submit him in the end. Action packed, be sure to watch this fight as soon as you can.
This leads us to the UFC Stacked card. The card was stacked, the fights were unimpressive. Lightweight champion Shean Sherk smothered Hermes Franca to victory, basically taking him down at will and peppering him from the ground. Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans basically had a stare down dance contest. Neither fighter aggressively pushed the fight, making it very frustrating to watch. The Nate Marquardt vs. Anderson Silva was a little more exciting, but once again the Brazilian Spider swung precision missiles and TKO’d the former king of Pancrase in the 2nd round.
