6.12.07 TWS AWARDS, THE DAY AFTER, AND ONE WAY SKATE DEMO

The 9th Annual Transworld Awards and video premiere for “Let’s Do This” took place this past Thursday, June 7th. We loaded up our newly acquired Osiris team van for it’s maiden voyage and hit the open road toward epic adventures. Our squad at this point was Shuriken Shannon, Jimmy Carlin, John Lupfer, and Cuong on TM duties, Russell to cover the angles, and myself to have some fun and support the team. We arrived early to the venue, met up with friends and anxiously waited to cheer on Clint Peterson as well as Osiris alumni, Peter Smolik. Both guys had amazing parts in the video. Caswell Berry and the enjoi crew deserve honorable mention for taking home best video of 2006 with Bag Of Suck. Congratulations are also in order for Jerry Hsu who walked away with video part of the year for Bag Of Suck along with the TWS reader’s choice award. After the awards and the premiere the crew ventured off in high spirits to attend many of the night’s after parties. San Diego had particularly strong representation throughout Los Angeles, and it’s safe to say the term “SK8MAFIA” is still echoing through the streets and nightclubs of the City of Angels.

The following day, we picked up John Rattray from LAX, who would be joining us on the trip up the coast to the One Way demo in Santa Maria. We met up at Clint’s house and spent a fair amount of time skating his indoor mini ramp and deciding on a what spots we’d be able to hit on a Friday afternoon. Although the spots in downtown LA are plentiful, traffic was getting deep in every direction, so we stayed local and ended up at the loading dock over the bars, where Jimmy Carlin got busy. After the session, we had a nice meal before hitting the road for a three-hour drive to Santa Maria to check into our hotel and meet up with Corey Duffel. Corey drove down from Walnut Creek to meet up with the team the night before the demo.

The next morning, we woke up bright and early for the demo. One Way had us scheduled for 11:00 am, so directly following breakfast and some much needed coffee, the team arrived to get things started. There was a huge turnout and immediately the guys were being mobbed for their autographs. In between signing, boards, hats, t-shirts, and the occasional beach ball, the guys got on the course and ripped for the crowd. After the demo the guys signed more autographs to the appreciative fans, then we hit the road to do some street skating before heading back to San Diego.

Special thanks to One Way Boardshop, our talented and good-natured Nor Cal Sales Rep, Steve Denham and his family, the coveted “Wheel Of Misfortune” for being the all-time crowd pleaser, the enjoi team for skating the demo and hanging out, and all of the kids for coming. Hope to see you all again soon.
Let the good times roll,
Mike Fitz
