Red Bull's Skate Generation - Pedro Barros bowl An invite only comp, and the only way you got in was from the years before being invited or you won a free trip during one of the bowl-a-ramas during the beginning of the year in Oz. I have only heard nothing but great things about this place, Florianopolis, Brazil. Home bowl to the brazilian phenomenon, Pedro Barros! This was the 3rd edition of this unique fun competition presented by Red Bull and hosted by Andre and Pedro Barros! And with it came a brand new layer of concrete and coping this year. As in the past, the surface was not so good, rugged and many known it as really abrasive and hard to skate with hard lines to obtain, unless you lived there, in this case, we did not. So we had lots to learn in such little time .

The OCC crew that attended was Josh Rodriguez, Alex Sorgente, Nathan Beck, and Sergie Ventura. The biggest downfall was the unknown versions of the weather as it called for bad rain, imagine that, in the rainforest, all week and even during the contest.

Contest format? This was a very unique concept and a super cool one at that. There were 4 divisions….Ams, Pros, Masters, and Legends each broken down into proper age groups as well. The top 6 spots from each individual contest would ONLY be allowed to skate the next day during the TEAM competition. So each skater, depending on what place they got, was united with the same ranked skater from each division. So each 1st place guy in each division made Team #1 with a total of 4 skaters each team, each 2nd place guy in each division made TEAM #2, and so on and so on…..BUT only in the pro division the guys were paid down to 15th place, and ONLY in the Team Competition did anyone else get rewarded.

Due to the weather and the rain on Wednesday and Thursday, we basically got about an hour and a half of practice in a bowl we barely got to know! But that wasn't the big picture, the big picture was that we were a part of this event and the amazing energy that came with it, seriously not even feeling like a comp at all. It was stress free and FUN, which is one of the main reasons why we ride, right? So with these attributes, it made the week of skating even better!!

Most of the OCC crew made it to the next round to the team competition if they didn't, most placed high in the rankings during the individual comps. Alex Sorgente 10th in Pro Josh Rodriguez 6th in Pro Nathan Beck from Oz placed 12th in Pro and Sergie Ventura ended up in 6th in Master, even while getting food poisoning the morning of the comp and having flu like temperatures during his qualifying heat.

Josh and Sergie made it thru for the team competition which was a live web cast all day sunday, April 14th.

Now let me explain the surroundings. We were in the Rain Forest with only dirt roads, poisonous snakes and dangerous animals off the trails, super sized bugs that chased you while you walked or ran, and owls that preyed on these super sized bugs all night and Monkeys even came out around our cabins in the evenings! Not to mention, the VIBE of everyone and everything, the Pride of Brazil for their skaters and scenic views which only surrounded us was infectious.

This competition was so stress free, again, not even feeling like a contest, which in turn, created the ultimate positive skate sessions the whole week. There were reunions from skaters that had not seen one another in 20-30 years, there were guys acting like they had known each other for that long, and the camaraderie was at an all time high because of all of these factors that made the whole week a pleasure to be there.
