9.13.10 A FEW MINUTES WITH DARRYL TOCCO

    1. What’s new in your life?
Life is good. Been on the road with Jay from Kink basically the whole summer riding a ton and enjoying amazing weather and spots. Staying busy and enjoying it.

    2. How’s the weather in New Jersey?
The weather right now is pretty good. I just got home Saturday and I heard it was brutally hot before that. I’ve been nursing two bruised heels, so I’m kinda laying low on riding this week while I’m home.

    3. What’s the best trip you’ve been on in the past few months?
Shit… Europe was seriously unreal. So many new countries, people, spots, cultures. It was dope. Definitely a different feel over there. I also went to Vancouver for the first time a few weeks back and it was amazing. That city is the best.

    4. You’re making the move to Long Beach soon. What’s up with that?

Miserable weather on the East Coast is going to come up quick, so myself and a couple dudes are doing the escape plan thing. We just went to find an apartment and got a dialed spot; can’t wait to get back there. The dudes and I are leaving in a few days for a cross country trip out there. New Orleans, Austin, Phoenix, Vegas for Interbike, then move into the new crib. Psyched.

    5. Do you think you’re ready for California life?
Probably not. Never moved from the East Coast, so it should be interesting.

    6. How’s your signature frame been holding up?
Really well, I’m really psyched on everything. I’m not super hard on my bikes, but my brother rode one for a year and he is a beast. Go get that.

    7. What shoe have you been riding in lately?
I ride in Chino Lows 90% of the time. Sometimes I’ll switch it up to Shurikens or Chino Mids. Chinos are the shit.

    8. There have been a few rumors about a new Bad Timing video in the works. Details?
Yeah, Bad Timing was a little project I did with all my friends growing up, and it just seemed like it was time for another excuse to do some trips with my good ass friends from home and toss a few curve balls in there. No deadlines, no pressure, just a bunch of friends doing our thing.

    9. You recently traded in the VX and started shooting HD. How’s that working out for you?
I’ll shoot HD only for web intended projects, but for anything I know is going to DVD, I’ll mix it up with the VX. I like the look and feel of a nice mix of that stuff; the HD stuff stands out nicely when its stacked against some good old VX fisheye stuff. No hate on all HD stuff though, the United video is flat out unreal.

    10. What are your plans for the rest of tonight?
Work on some video projects for Kink, just chill out. Watch It’s Always Sunny

    11. What are your plans for the rest of 2010?

Make it out to California and get real comfortable, an Osiris trip, work on my new video, kick Tony Hamlin’s ass everyday, stay busy.

7.29.10 A FEW MINUTES WITH RYAN NYQUIST

    Hi Ryan. How are you?
    I’m good, thanks for asking.

How are you feeling going into the 2010 X-Games?
Well, I’ve been looking forward to the X-Games because I’ve had some not-so-great placings in the past few years. I’m hoping to change that in 2010.

During your career, how many X-Games events have you competed in?
From 1997 to 2004 I rode in the park and dirt events. Then, in 2005 (I think) X-Games stopped doing dirt, so I was only invited for park. I didn’t attend last year, so if you add that all up it comes to…. nineteen events. Twenty counting this year!

How many X-Games medals have you earned?
I’ve been asked this a lot lately and I’m not 100% sure. I want to say thirteen medals total. I haven’t looked at the medals in a while. They kind of just sit in a box in my attic… hahaha.

A lot of riders have mixed feelings about the X-Games. As a whole, how do you feel about the event?
I don’t mind the event. It’s definitely changed a lot over the years, but it’s still a big event for BMX and gets it out there to the masses. The athlete selection process and course design are mysteries to me nowadays, but all that aside, it’s still an exciting event.

What do you think of this year’s Superpark course?
The course is definitely unique. It’s like nothing I ride on a daily basis, and it’s definitely throwing me for a loop. The fact that it’s all cement makes me nervous, too. Cement kinda scares me. It’s tough to try to figure everything out in a handful of hours, put together some quality lines, and add tricks to it. I’m hoping I can make some things line up and get comfortable enough to make the cut.

What are your goals and expectations for the contest?
My goal is to ride well. Expectations? I don’t really have any. I’d just like to ride well enough to make the cut.

What shoes are you going to be rocking during the contest?
I’ll be rocking the NYC 83 Mids. That’s my favorite shoe to ride in. I brought some Shuriken Lows for chillin’ in, though.

Who are some of the riders you look forward to watching ride the course?
Well, Chase Hawk and Gary Young pretty much own the course at this point, so I’d have to say them. I’m curious to see what Diogo Canina and Scotty Cranmer will be able to do out there. Rob Darden is looking like he may have some good lines, too.

Is your boy David Beckham coming out to watch you this year?
Hahaha! Well, he wants to, but I didn’t have an extra pass for him. He’s just going to watch from home.

As soon as the event is over, where’s the celebration?
Wherever Sean Burns is. He’s a walking party!

2.17.10 A FEW MINUTES WITH BOY

Now that Primo’s Nice Try has wrapped up, what projects have you been working on?
I’ve been lagging lately, but I’ve been working on Scrap-o-Licious Dos, an Osiris edit, and a Cardinal edit – hopefully all out soon! I’ma try to stay busy this year and put out more shit.

Do you have any big trips in the works?
New York for sure as soon as the weather clears up. Hopefully sooner than later; aroun April. Shit, I hope Spain again soon! Maybe lil’ trips here and there with da homies.

How are things after you got hurt in Canada? Any other bad crashes lately?
Yeah, that Canada fall sucked! I still have nightmares from it, haha. I’ve been good up until about a month ago. I got fucked up! I pretty much dove off a seven or eight foot wall onto my head, hands, and shoulders, haha. My head hit first and my body scorpioned over me and I got up gasping for air. I thought I was cool, just a lil’ pain that would go away in a day… wrong! I had to go to the hospital two days later because I had some shit like a bruised or swollen kidney and possibly broken ribs. It wasn’t that bad I guess. It could have been worse.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when someone mentions a strip club?
Dayyyummmm! Haha, oh let’s do this! The fun zone!

Are there any riders out there that you want to see more of?
Kids are crazy these days. Everything is usually so good. I always enjoy Garrett Reynolds, Nathan Williams, Jamie Bestwick, and Harry Main, but a few riders I’m really feeling right now are the underdogs like Bobby Simmons, Mike Mastroni, Lil D, Shane Weston, Fakie Master, Ratkid, Matty Long, and my boy Chris Brown.

Tell us about your favorite shoes.
Hahaha, buy them motherfuckers! Haha, nah, yo, they’re good. I love Chino Mids, and it’s even better now that they got ‘em in like a million colors. Go buy Osiris. They’ll get you lots of ho’s! Haha.

How are things with your other sponsors?
Things are going good with Primo and Cardinal. Scrap-o-Licious Dos coming soon from Primo, Cardinal frames are available now! Go cop one or two and don’t forget to keep your eyes open for my signature bars coming out real soon. Holla!

Have you learned to speak any Spanish since your last trip to Barcelona?
Hahaha, nah, I haven’t learned anything. I’ve been lagging to buy the Spanish for Dummies book that I said I was going to get.

You’re always joking around, but moving to a serious note, will you tell us about what happened to your dad?
On July 29, 2009 my world was flipped upside down. I got a phone call at 8 AM to hear my mom crying and saying, “They got Dad, Boy! They got Dad! He’s in the hospital!” My mom told me cops came knocking at the door and told her they found him at 5 AM, left for dead, and the family should rush to the hospital because things look bad. I was thinking, “Damn, they roughed him up good!” but nah. It was way worse. When we got to the hospital the doctor told us the extensive injuries he had. He was barely breathing and they told us to prepare ourselves for the worst because he had extreme swelling of his head and he was stabbed above his left eyebrow with a blunt object. The first time I saw him in the hospital, doctors were rushing him past us to his bed and I just broke down in tears. His face was unrecognizable. He was still all bloody and his head was three times the size it normally was, to say the least. I could hear him grunting and making noise. He was in pain.

It was a long time before we found out what actually happened and we still don’t know everything. Cops found him left for dead in the projects where we lived. He was on his way to work at 3 AM and he was jumped by five gangsters. When I looked at my dad in the hospital bed all I could think was the worst to whoever was responsible. I won’t say much, but the streets have a way of sorting these things out. There are rules in the streets, and if you don’t believe that then you’re not from the streets. You don’t fuck with an old, non-active gangster if he doesn’t fuck with you.

There’s no reason to exaggerate anything with this story because trust me, I wish it didn’t happen. My dad supported my family to the fullest. When something like this happens to a poor family like mine its like chickens with their heads cut off. Since this all wen down I’ve been paying three cell phone bills, two insurance bills, and my mom’s rent. My dad’s still alive. He can’t talk or walk, but he’s aware of everything around him and has his full memory back. He’ll never be the same, but he’s a strong man. So yeah, Life goes on. We can’t change what happen, but I ask myself everyday if my dad would be proud with what I’m doing with my family. I’ma do my fuckin’ thing, so we’ll see. Period.

    Any thanks?
Yeah, man. I’d like to thank everyone who supports my riding. This update is for you! I’d also like to thank all of my sponsors for showing me so much support during the time all this bullshit happened. My girl and her friends, my family and all of my homies, and last but not least, thanks to my dad for being one of the few who supported me riding a bike.

    Shout outs?
I’d like to give a shout out to Eman! I’ll turn into a transformer before I turn on E. Glenn PP Milligan, Cardinal Bikes, Primo, and Osiris Shoes! Everyone, fuck it! Robbie! Hope all goes well for him and Cult. Shout out to Nick over at Fit! Everyone at Animal who hooked me up in da past. Shout out to Ralphy Lifeee and Longstory! Fernando over in Spain, all the websites that post my shit, and to every real motha fucka ’cause it seems like fake is da new trend and everyone is in style! If I missed ya, sorry. Shouts to ya! Get well soon, Pops! Peace! Holla!

How’s the Portland summer treating you?
Summer is so good this year. We’ve had some record heat waves, so I’m trying to ride as early as possible whenever I get the chance.

What have you been up to lately?
Being a dad, working, and riding as much as I can. I’m trying to finish my part for the Goods BMX DVD.

What exactly is your day job?
I do resets and remodels at grocery stores.

    How much do you work?
I work everyday. It gets hard sometimes because I just want to ride so bad, but it’s gotta get done to support the family. I haven’t slept past 6am on weekdays and 7am on weekends in several months.

How often do you get to ride?
I get a session in pretty much everyday. Whether it’s a good one or not, I just try to be on my bike for a bit.

Tell us a little bit about being a dad…
It’s a lot better than not being one! It’s really put my life and everything I do in perspective. I don’t find myself wasting much time anymore.

When are we going to see Levi on a bike?
He’s already been on a bike, but still has some work to do. Maybe I’ll send him to Woodward to train! Haha.

    Ben & Levi

How does your lady deal with parenting a child with a guy that pretty much has two full time jobs?
She’s doing good. It gets hard sometimes for both of us. We both have things going on besides normal jobs. Amy has a fashion line, so we usually have to remind each other that we have stuff to do and to give each other breaks so we can get it done.

What’s your favorite shoe and what do you like about it?
I really like the South Bronx. I don’t worry about bruising my heels or anything. Great color-ways, look good, and not too bulky with plenty of support.

What is DollarBillParty and what happened to it?
It was DollarBillParty.com, then DollarBillParty.net, and now it’s DollarBillParty.nothing. It was fun running a functional blog for a minute, but I’ve got too much time on my hands right now to focus on anything other than family, work, and BMX.

    Ben_Hucke

What’s the best strip club in Portland and why?
I think Sassy’s is everyone’s favorite and I don’t have to spend money there.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?
Figure out my plans for the rest of the year, haha! Get my passport, go to a couple of contests, finish my section for the Goods video, and keep on pedaling.

    Anything you’d like to add?
Thanks to my whole family and everyone at Haro Bikes for all of the support on and off my bike and for keeping me motivated to be more than a bum.

    6.22.09 ANTHONY “BOY” FLORES

    Anthony Flores

    Anthony "Boy" Flores

    Name: Anthony “Boy” Flores

    Age: 22-teen

How long have you lived in Los Angeles? Since I was crapped out.

Who all do you ride for? Osiris, Cardinal, Primo, and Cerbae.

What’s the craziest thing that happened to you in Barcelona last month? Haha. Dam, well I’d like to start off by giving a shout out to da homies Fernando, Juan and all their roommates! Now the craziest shit that happened to me in Bcn was on the 1st night we got there. Haha. Fresh off the plane we went out to some local bars, and I got donzo! At the end of the night on our way back to Fernandos house I stopped to take a piss as the others walked ahead, and while I’m pissing I turn around and Glenn and Juan are sliding on the wet slippery Bcn floors for some reason. Juan falls but Glenn doesn’t bcuz he’s the roller blade king. Haha. Anyways, so I’m done pissing and I run to catch up to the others and I just started sliding, haha and mid slide I do like this flip straight to my face. KO’d! I woke up in a lil puddle of blood and water. I stumbled back up to the house and needed stitches, but I just put a butterfly on it and went to sleep. Haha. I woke up with a bump on the side of my head , a headache, a heavy eye and a lil bit of my dignity gone.

    Anthony "Boy" Flores

If you were at Jack in the Box and the whole meal was free, what would you order? I’d probably order a number 5 large with no mustard, a Dr. Pepper, potato wedges, a shake and some mini churros. I’ll probably have mud-butt afterwards, but it will be worth it.

Are you stoked on your section in the new Primo video? Ummm! Nah ,not really, but it’s no one’s fault but mine. Haha. I got broke, and I was just in a fucked state of mind the whole time. I was being a pussy for a long time. Haha, but I guess you are what you eat. Lol.

What’s your favorite strip club? Deja Vu in the city of industry. Fire girls there! Lol.

If I offered you $500 to jump the XGames Mega Ramp, would you do it? I think I’d say hell yeah! Then when I actually got up there I’d say fuck this! Haha. Shits fuckin crazy that anyone fucks with that. Haha.

What’s new at Cardinal? Everything. It’s a new company. Lol. JK. Well we’re just trying to get this popping off already. Ads are being ran in RideBMX and frames are done. Now we’re just waiting on their arrival. The website should be going up real soon along with a fun edit put together by none other than Glenn PP Miligan, so keep your eye out for all this and more. Cardinal “let’s get it!”

What are you doing the rest of today? Well right now I’m heading down to Tip Plus distribution to pick up some copies of the new primo video “Nice Try”. After we dip off from there me and Eman are probably gonna go and check out some spots and hopefully film some shit. Cardinal edit coming soon! Dat what’s really good in the hood shit. After that probably just chill. Haha.
