2.28.10 MARCUS TOOKER’S AUSTRALIA TRIP BLOG
Marcus Tooker recently spent some time in Australia and New Zealand. Here’s the whole story straight from his mouth -
I finally made it back to the US after a pretty amazing trip through New Zealand and Australia. I lived out of a backpack for 30 days with nothing else but my bike. It was quite an experience, I rode a lot and tried to hit all the famous spots along the east coast of Australia. Bondi Beach in Sydney was first. The skatepark is pretty much on the beach. It was awesome to have a session then go hop in the ocean and play in the waves. I randomly ran into Harry Main there as well.
I went down to Cam White’s Hillside Dirt Jam in Canberra. The jumps were nuts, definitely the biggest jumps I’ve ever been on. The fact that guys were doing tricks on them was just insane. I was like a little kid during the jam running around taking photos of dudes doing backflips, haha. Cam White’s family was nice enough to let me crash on their couch during the jam and even made me bacon and sausage in the mornings. This is also where I was introduced to meat pies, a traditional Australian food that I can’t believe we don’t have in America.
After Cam’s Jam, I headed to Melbourne with Free Flow Tour winner Matt Whyatt and his buddy Shanon Farrugia. This was probably my favorite stop from the trip. They were both awesome hosts and let me stay with them and even took me spear fishing on a reef. We rode a whole bunch too. Shannon has dialed mini in his back yard that we got into one evening. We also rode around the city of Melbourne for a bit and I got to do some filming at this pretty sweet park called Rampfest.
After Melbourne it was up to Brisbane to stay with Chris Courtenay. He and his buddies get loose. I watched them get kicked out of every bar in Surfer’s Paradise. It was a night full of laughs for sure. Chris gave me tour of his home city. First we went to Ride On bike shop in Brisbane, this shop kicks ass. If I ever open a bike shop I want it to be like this place. We rode a bunch of concrete parks over the next few days and even made it to the legendary Beenleigh park.
All in all this was an amazing trip, it’ll be one I’m talking about for years to come. Thanks to everyone who let me crash on their couch! I had so much fun on and off the bike, I couldn’t have asked for a better time.
